Research, Politics, Halloween, and Theater

I’ve kind of forgotten to write things here, so I have a lot to catch up on.  I’ve been having a hard time getting back into a steady work schedule, but I’m finally starting to feel better about it.  There’s a lot of hype all over about the elections coming up, and I’m really nervous about it.  It’s the first time I’ve voted in California, and these propositions are so strange.  A simple majority of the population should not be able to amend the state constitution when elected representatives (who are *a little* more qualified) need a supermajority.  gah.  I’m particularly worried about Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriage in CA.  There are ads running claiming that gay marriage will be taught to children, and I think they’re underhanded, since it has nothing to do with education.  It makes me mad to see ‘Yes on 8′ signs up all over the place.

Anyway, Halloween is tomorrow and I might actually have a costume.  There are several parties and stuff all day, so it should be fun.  I’m going as a Roman woman, but I haven’t decided on which one yet (I can’t think of any distinguishing features anyway).  Probably Portia, Brutus’ wife, but maybe Octavia.  Oh and I’m in a play!  I’m in 2 scenes of a play written by a Caltech alum about his mother, who worked on propellant for rockets in the 1950s.  I missed auditions, but when I asked if they needed run crew, they gave me a part =)  They have no idea how to run a theater group, though.  They don’t even seem to have a rehearsal stage manager – what are they thinking?  It goes up the 7th, 8th, and 9th of November, so overall, it’s not affecting my life that much…just the next two weeks.

About meg

I think planets are cool! I'm a new graduate student in Planetary Science at Caltech, and at the moment I'm interested in planetary geophysics of terrestrial planets and moons. I'm originally from Cortlandt Manor, NY, and I did my undergrad at MIT, where I got heavily involved in student theater - a hobby I hope to continue through grad school, time permitting... I also like to read sci-fi/fantasy novels, obsess about English history, and play frisbee.
