Holly’s visit!

What a busy weekend! Holly’s flight got in Saturday afternoon, and we went out for sushi and then to a play at the Pasadena Playhouse.  The play was called “Orson’s Shadow,” and it was about Orson Welles and Laurence Olivier, whom they kept calling “Larry,” hehe.  It wasn’t bad, but the ending was a little lame.  Entertaining, though, and definitely worth the $15 rush student ticket price – we were in the 2nd row.

On Sunday Jon and Holly and I trekked to the Getty (the art museum, not the villa), which took 3 buses and 2.5 hours each way.  It was cool though.  They were having a big medieval stuff exhibit (paintings, pages from books, armor, etc), and the whole place is really pretty with a great view of LA and Santa Monica.  And it was free =) As museums really should be.

And yesterday, between my classes, we went to the Huntington to look at the old books, and Holly stayed to wander around the gardens.  It was a little stressful to try and be fun and not get behind on the new quarter, but it went fine.

I had to lead a seminar discussion this morning on a book that we had to read over the past week, so I’m glad that’s over and it went well.  The book is called The Two-Mile Time Machine and it’s about climate records in the ice cores from Greenland – very accessible and written for a lay audience (the analogies get a bit ridiculous).

I also moved to my new office today, which was kind of sad.  I’m not quite done moving, but the computer is there now, so I really do have to sit there.  But I’m thinking of re-orienting the desk before I get too comfy, so we’ll see.

Here’s some pictures of the Getty!

About meg

I think planets are cool! I'm a new graduate student in Planetary Science at Caltech, and at the moment I'm interested in planetary geophysics of terrestrial planets and moons. I'm originally from Cortlandt Manor, NY, and I did my undergrad at MIT, where I got heavily involved in student theater - a hobby I hope to continue through grad school, time permitting... I also like to read sci-fi/fantasy novels, obsess about English history, and play frisbee.

Those pictures look very nice; maybe I’ll have to go there with some friends from undergrad I’ll be visiting next month.

Actually, I meant to go there last year but it was closed and we went to the villa instead. The villa turned out to be one of my favorite museums ever, so I can’t say I’m too upset.

I haven’t made it to other museums yet – there’s the villa and the Norton Simon art museum (which is in Pasadena and much much easier to get to!). Maybe when my parents come out to visit.

    When will you be visiting?
