Last night we came back to find a huge black widow spider right outside our door! Eww. I don’t really know what to do about it. They’re not supposed to be aggressive, but I don’t know why it chose that spot to hang out, since it’s not dark and secluded like they’re supposed to like either…
We were coming back from a documentary on Monsanto, the big genetically-engineered-food company, organized by a Pasadena farmstead. I’ve heard bad things about Monsanto before, about how they patent seeds and lock farmers into buying them every year, and sue farmers who don’t buy from them because their crops cross-pollinate with neighbors’ and they end up with the GM crops anyway. I was sad to hear that even Mexican corn has been contaminated by GM corn from the US, just by having it at the markets and nearby. Doesn’t seem good. These farmstead folks need to work on their delivery, though. The way that they presented things really didn’t help their cause at all…very yellow journalism, and there should have been more effort spent on justifying sources. It would have been much more effective if they had just let the people they interviewed and the documents they read speak for themselves. Actually, the whole thing is on YouTube, so you can watch it if you want:
