Books in my life right now

I’m really excited about a few books that I’ve been reading/looking at lately, so I thought I would say some things about them. First, I’m impressed by these editions of Shakespeare’s plays. They’re first folio texts for each play, which is kind of nice. I mean, I really really like my folio fascimile giant red book, but it’s hard to read out of casually, so these are great! And the guy who put them together, Neil Freeman, seems to know what he’s doing. He notes changes that modern editors make (and why) and leaves the verso side of the page blank to take notes on =)

Next, this is the book I just read with the sci-fi reading club my friend here started. It was pretty classic sci-fi, with lost alien races and space travel with a 30% chance of survival, but it was also very interesting, jumping back and forth between the actual story and the main character’s subsequent sessions with his computerized psychologist, Sigfrid.

And here’s the book that we’re reading next, apparently about a comet or asteroid that hits the earth and destroys almost everyone. Yay! I still have to find a copy of this one.

That’s it for now, although there are a few other books on my radar…I just don’t get to pick them up very often. I’ll write soon about how the plays went last weekend – they were both pretty enjoyable, but, I think, for very different reasons.

About meg

I think planets are cool! I'm a new graduate student in Planetary Science at Caltech, and at the moment I'm interested in planetary geophysics of terrestrial planets and moons. I'm originally from Cortlandt Manor, NY, and I did my undergrad at MIT, where I got heavily involved in student theater - a hobby I hope to continue through grad school, time permitting... I also like to read sci-fi/fantasy novels, obsess about English history, and play frisbee.

Hey cool, someone has actually read it. We’re taking turns recommending books, so at some point I’ll have to suggest something – have any recommendations? I’d rather suggest something I haven’t actually read yet.

what about a big red book larger than a telephone directory makes it hard to read casually? is it the red? 😉

in high school, i read pretty much everything niven wrote, and i feel like his collaborations with pournelle are better-written overall, but often less, i dunno, fun? 🙂

i recommend David Brin’s uplift saga, if you haven’t read it. I’m on the last book. much of it has been described as slow, but that’s just because he spends so much time and effort on character development. and it has talking dolphins. 😀
