Jon’s visit + apartment searches + Huntingdon Library

Well it’s Tuesday morning and Jon just left to go back to Boston and finish moving out. It was a good visit, even though nothing definite has really been decided housing-wise. Everything within easy walking distance of campus is really expensive, so it remains to be seen whether a cheaper place could be found farther out, and then whether walking/biking/buses are good enough to get around from there. So he’ll keep looking online and sending me out to see places, if necessary.

On Sunday we went to the Huntingdon Library to see the old book exhibition, and it was amazing! This place is apparently one of the large sources for primary documents kept on the EEBO (Early English Books Online) database, and the ones out in the exhibition hall were really cool – they have a first folio 😉 So that was a lot of fun (and the gardens were pretty too). We walked there, which really didn’t take long, and we got to see several million-dollar San Marino homes while we were at it. I wish it didn’t cost so much to be a member – then I wouldn’t mind going back every once in a while =)

Well, my fun weekend is over now – back to work, sigh.

About meg

I think planets are cool! I'm a new graduate student in Planetary Science at Caltech, and at the moment I'm interested in planetary geophysics of terrestrial planets and moons. I'm originally from Cortlandt Manor, NY, and I did my undergrad at MIT, where I got heavily involved in student theater - a hobby I hope to continue through grad school, time permitting... I also like to read sci-fi/fantasy novels, obsess about English history, and play frisbee.

Thinking of fun things in that area, aren’t you near the Griffith Observatory? I got to see it once when I was visiting a friend who lives in LA. Lots of nifty astronomy stuff, and a nice view of surrounding area. Unfortunately I was there on a cloudy day, so no actual observing was available. Seems like the kind of place you’d like.

Yeah, actually I am pretty close to that, although – I admit – I’ve never heard of it. Seems cool, though. I’m not in the observing kind of planetary science, so I actually don’t know an incredible amount about telescopes (shocking, I know). But their website makes it sound fun =) I’ll have to look into it for one of these weekends…sometime when I have access to a car perhaps.

I do remember that you’re more planetary science than astronomy, but I figure that makes visiting an observatory more fun – it wouldn’t be exactly like work.

Also, if you’re into Greeks & Romans, the Getty Villa is absolutely grand. It’s a replica Roman villa on the Pacific coast with a very intriguing collection of antiquities. I found the display of theater themed Greek vases particularly interesting. Also, the grounds were so lovely, it made me wish I had my own villa.
