Ducking Butterflies

There are plants on either side of my door in the graduate apartment complex, and walking out after lunch today, I had to duck *twice* to avoid a very large monarch butterfly going from one side to the other. Apparently this one likes to fly right at my eye level. I felt silly for ducking (good thing no one saw me), but still, like tigers and impressionist paintings, butterflies are prettier when they’re not five inches from my face…

About meg

I think planets are cool! I'm a new graduate student in Planetary Science at Caltech, and at the moment I'm interested in planetary geophysics of terrestrial planets and moons. I'm originally from Cortlandt Manor, NY, and I did my undergrad at MIT, where I got heavily involved in student theater - a hobby I hope to continue through grad school, time permitting... I also like to read sci-fi/fantasy novels, obsess about English history, and play frisbee.

one thing i already miss from colorado is the hummingbirds. so much less fauna in boston… well aside from Lambent, the infamous and inexplicable wild turkey of east cambridge.

ooo, and you should take butterfly pictures!

Hehe ok. Next time I see it I’ll try to take a picture of it. After I dodge it, of course.

Butterflies are scary up close, man! A couple years ago I saw this traveling exhibit from some butterfly museum, and they had a few hundred butterflies inside a tent that was entirely too small. Every time you took a step, you’d bump into a butterfly. They’re pretty from far away, but when they’re flying at your face at full tilt, they’re rather nasty-looking… don’t feel bad for ducking. 🙂
