Conferences + The Week Reduced!

Today I found out that I can totally go to AGU this year and just hang out and go to talks and meet people, even though I’m a new grad student and have nothing to show for myself yet.  Yay!  My adviser says his rule of thumb is to allow each student (that works for him?) one free conference (all paid, and no presenting involved) per year.  And it’s possible, maybe even likely, that I’ll have something to submit to LPSC in March, so maybe I don’t even have to choose between them.  Neato!  I have to find people to room with though and buy plane tickets and check that it doesn’t conflict with finals…yeah.

In other news, the Reduced Shakespeare Company (RSC, not to be confused with the Royal Shakespeare Company, heh) is launching a TV show this fall, and I have tickets to sit in the audience!  It’s called “The Week Reduced” and is a news comedy show.  Hopefully it won’t suck and get canceled after the first one.  Anyway, I think this counts as the first real perk to living near LA that I’ve encountered so far.  If anyone else will be in the area and wants to go, call me, or else get your own tickets (they’re free) at http://www.tvtickets.com.

About meg

I think planets are cool! I'm a new graduate student in Planetary Science at Caltech, and at the moment I'm interested in planetary geophysics of terrestrial planets and moons. I'm originally from Cortlandt Manor, NY, and I did my undergrad at MIT, where I got heavily involved in student theater - a hobby I hope to continue through grad school, time permitting... I also like to read sci-fi/fantasy novels, obsess about English history, and play frisbee.

Tons of oceanographer-type people go to AGU from my program (just not me). I can let you know if I hear of people looking for roommates, and vouch for their character.

Cool – that would be great. Yeah, it’s supposedly a really huge conference, and I guess it covers all kinds of geophysics…is that what the oceanographers who go do?
