I went to a couple of bike shops to try out some of the models I’ve read about. I think I’m going to change my mind about the “comfort style” — they feel silly to me, very bulky and heavy. I’m worried about being comfortable riding, since I haven’t done it in 9+ years, but I probably don’t need to baby myself quite that much…I mean, I’ll get used to it, right? The step-through feature is still pretty tempting, though. One that I rode (a real bike, not the comfort kind) also comes in a step-through model, so I think my next move is to see if anyone carries that and try it, or otherwise see if they know if it rides the same as the one I did try. That might be my best bet. No time for that, though, until the weekend…if then…sigh.

You’ll pick it back up just fine. I hadn’t ridden a bike for that long when I got mine a couple of years ago. Starting and stopping gracefully took a little practice, but I didn’t have any balancing problems at all. I find I like the normal style bikes myself because I sit up higher on them; the extra visibility makes me feel safer.
By the way, thanks for suggesting I watch Rome a while back. I’ve finally got around to it and I’m loving the first season. (Well, except that Caesar ought to be bald, but I guess that’s not the most important bit)
Rome is so good! Have you asked (director) Mike about it? He says he won’t show it to his students because it’s probably too accurate (i.e. graphic). I haven’t watched the whole second season yet. There are only two, I think. You should watch the “making of” specials, though…it’s’ amazing how much effort and money went into that show.
Yeah, starting and stopping are hard. I thoroughly embarassed myself in front of the bike guy at the store. Oh well, he was nice about it I guess.
I’m ambivalent about watching the second season because Marilyn told me they stopped making them in the middle leaving a lot unresolved. That could be frustrating . . . I am looking forward to the “making of” specials, though.
I actually haven’t talked to Mike about it yet, but I’m not surprised that he can’t get away with showing it in a public school.
